CHICKAMAUGA LAKE - SOUTHEAST TENNESSEE
Chickamauga dam was constructed by Tennessee Valley Authority from 1936 to 1940. Chickamauga Lake was named after the Chickamauga Indians that formerly inhabited this area around Chattanooga, Tennessee. Chickamauga Lake is located in Hamilton, Meigs and Rhea Counties. Chickamauga Lake offers 35,000 acres of water for recreation on the Tennessee River. There are two state parks, two county parks and several municipal parks located on Lake Chickamauga. With over 800 miles of shoreline, Chickamauga Lake offers fishing, swimming, boating, camping, picnicking and bird and wildlife watching as popular activities. Marinas, resorts, boat tours, beaches, restaurants and boat launches surround Lake Chickamauga. A ten mile river walk beside the Tennessee River begins at Chickamauga Dam and continues to downtown Chattanooga, where a walking bridge spans the Tennessee River. Chickamauga Lake is also fed by the Hiwassee River and the famous archaelogical site, Hiwassee Island is located at the northern end of the Lake. Crane Days is a famous bird watching event held every February at the Hiwassee Wildlife Refuge. Chickamauga Lake has many scenic coves, peninsulas and islands making it a great vacation destination or permanent or second home site.
